Does anyone remember the beating Fisk gave Piniella back in the 70's? I don't (because I'm too young) but I've seen the films. Would I put it past Piniella give the order for hitting a batter? No. He's a hard nosed player and manager. He's one of the last managers that will spit and kick dirt all over the umps (although it has been a while since we've seen one of those patented outburst). Maybe he still has pin stripes in his blood and hates the Sox. After all he did play in a time when a fist fight at a Red Sox - Yankees game was as common as a fly ball. He may have not given a direct order to hit someone but he probably implied it. I mean why would you have Lance Carter (whose fast ball is the same speed as Wakefield curveball) hit David Ortiz? The only way Big Papi would be hurt is if he was hit in the head. Wait a minute.....the ball was thrown at his head! So I guess what I'm trying to say is " They are your players Lou, you make the grownup decisions. If pitcher hits or attempts to hit a batter after a warning has been issued, it's your fault." That is why the manager gets ejected.
