What Hurts Us

A blown save. A blown lead. A sub-par pitching performance. A Wells that’s out for probably a month. Oh ya, and four losses in the last five games. I have to admit, early this season has seemed to provide some ‘momentum’ maintenance issues. For instance, I’m not sure how many blown save opportunities have happened, I know Embree has a couple, Foulke one now. Foulke already has 3 losses on his record, Wells and Clement threw two dreadful games, Schilling is far from his form, but the offense is perhaps findings its feet.

What to make of it all? Well, hopefully someway to start stringing along some wins. For a team that usually plays well at Fenway, they’ve gotten it handed to them in more ways than one this last homestand.

There are some plus sides despite the worry with the pitching:

Johnny Damon is on fire. His on-base percentage is over .400, awesome!
Jason Varitek is more than stable, batting at .328 and is already at 5 home runs on the year.
Manny still keeps driving runs in, now at 22 but with only a .250 avg.
Ortiz leads the team in home runs.
Millar is doing much better than I thought he’d be doing this time of year. No home runs, but he’s driving the ball to a .290 avg. and .438 on-base percentage. With 9 RBI’s, he’s probably on pace to at least have as many as he had last year (74).

Let’s hope that Wakefield can help us avoid a sweep at Fenway.
