Congress: The Evil Empire?

I’m a little puzzled about all of this. I guest the saying is ” good intentions, bad idea”. Doesn’t congress know that if they impose a 2 year suspension for first offense steroid use, it will cause a massive strike, not only for baseball but all the sports. Let’s just talk baseball. Do they think that the MLBPA will agree to this? It was hard enough to get them to agree on 10 days first offense. Tom Glavine has already said that the players will not agree.

Do I think that steroids are bad for baseball? Yes. Do I think that the penalty for getting caught should be stiffer? Yes. Do I agree with an Olympic policy? Hell No! I don’t want a strike. 94′ was awful. This will be the equivalent of WW3 for baseball (and I believe all profesional sports). Could you imagine a nation with out its pastime? I would rather watch a team of 9 Giambis’ juiced beyond belief then watch nothing. Yeah there would be replacement player, but with this undisclosed illegal substance list we are using, they would all be suspended.

I don’t know much about ” Laze Fair” but I think that professional sports fall under this. All those teams are a business. Unlike the Olympics which use amature athletes ( except basketball and hockey ) professional players sign a contract and get paid. Now how can the government come into McDonald per say and give a drug test? What if Jimmy the drive thru attendant tests positive for steroids? Does he get suspended for 2 years? I’ve learned over the years that if the government gets involved usually nothing good comes from it. So what about WWE? The Ultimate Warrior would become the Mediocre Warrior.

I know right now that it looks like MLB isn’t doing enough, but MLB doesn’t want to put itself and the hundreds of people that work for the teams out of work. The penalties probably should be stepped up but not so dramatically that it would be lights out. Does congress want to be responsible for all of that? It’s more than just the players that will brought under by a notion of good initiative.

Until next time. May the faith be with you. Shawn

Unfortunately, I have to agree this time with Shawn. As much as I would like to argue the alternative, that the policy will help, I don’t think Congress or government should be mingling with this as much as they are, or intend to. Shawn makes some valid points about the Govt. and its policies to other lines of work.

However, didn’t the Ultimate Warrior die because of drug use? And the govt. has more important issues they should be dealing with, other than the use of steroids in major league sports.

The Ultimate Warrior died because of cocain…I think. Drugs are bad mmmK, but could you ever imagine a skinny Canseco? How about a skinny Bonds? Wait a minute…Bonds was skinny!

I would rather a clean game. If it means replacement players, so be it. I think it’s an insult to the game to use performance enhancing drugs — why not let them use corked bats, then?

Whatever keeps the game going. The show must go on.
