As the Season Turns

As we all know this year has been nothing but one big drama. Starting from day one the drama and turmoil has been more front page than the game of baseball itself. Of course coming off a championship season that was truly amazing, the drama mill in probably the most fanatic city in sports has been buzzing.

Starting with Jason Varitek, being signed to a long term contract and being named the official team Captain it looked like Theo would provide us an interesting off season. Which he did. As it turned out Varitek was our biggest off season pickup. With Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe moving on, and ifs and whens about Curt Schilling it looked like our pitching staff was dead. And then there was a contract for Matt Clement that seemed like a band aid. Everyone was skeptical except Theo and it’s been working out good for us. It’s a good thing we had Tek signed because without him we may have never gotten Clement. Edgar Renteria was another good pick up in my eyes, but everyone saw that as the ” What’s wrong with Cabrera” signing.

Then of course, Opening Day. New York Yankees, Yankee Stadium. Randy Johnson vs. Curt Schilling. Except it was not Schilling, it was David Wells. Now we lose game one. Randy Johnson looks good. Wells looks below par. And Schilling is on the DL with the heroic ankle injury. The Nation is in panic after game 1 of 162. Things started to come around a bit and then they would go down. Curt came back then he went back, DL that is. Wells went down. Foulke is blowing up. The bull pen is following his lead. Millar, Mueller and Bellhorn have no homeruns and it’s May. Johnny Damon in a contract year, says he would cut his hair to play for the Boss. Jay Payton thinks he’s better than a #4 outfielder in Boston. Youkillis is in AAA. Bellhorn is in the MLB. And Terry Francona is looking very overwhelmed.

And now, our best offensive weapon says he wants out of Boston…again. Why is it so different this year than any other? I mean wasn’t it last year when the Sox tried to give Manny away? He was almost in Texas. Theo and the Sox front office has been trying to find a way to dump his contract since 2001. This is the third time Manny has asked to be traded. So what! Everyone says, ” If he doesn’t want to be here, trade him.” And if that happened everyone would be asking why. Maybe because we are the defending champs it doesn’t seem fathomable that Manny would want out. We all know that the guy is a bit different, so give him his space. If he wants a day off when we need him, give him the day off and be on with it. The media made a big deal about something that management did not. I do believe Manny should get a little special treatment because it’s not like he doesn’t put up 40 HR and 140 RBI a year. If he’s happy, we’re happy.

Now that the trade deadline has passed and the team is almost the same as it went in, can we concentrate on the pennant? Let’s talk about how we are playing and not all the rumors. Sure I like the gossip, but it’s too addicting. I’m starting to forget that we are in first place. But the first step to coming clean is admitting you have a problem.

I will be hosting a BA (BoSox Annonymous) mtg. this Friday night for those wishing to attend. And for the record, I am not Shawn’s sponsor ;-)

LOL…but all kidding aside. I’m having serious with drawls since the trade deadline is passed.

Trade deadline is bogus. Nothing happened this year –nothing big that is– because so much of the league, players and owners, have way-too-much invested financially. Manny is a perfect example. He does put up great numbers, and the Sox need that, but who wants the $20million salary (I doubt the Mets do)? And why should the Sox be willing to pick it up? I mean, afterall, they are paying everything but $100 thousand of NY Yankee Alan Embree’s $3 million salary.

Which makes me think, what a bum Embree is. Supposively he had several offers, and of course he would choose the Yankees!

You see the thing about Embree is, that we finally have someone behind enemy lines. He’ll still suck with the Yanks. Like the other day when he made that throwing error to first. And I don’t think the Sox ( now that is) are willing to pay Manny to play for another team. I also don’t think that a big price tag on a player is an issue for them. After all they were going to trade for A-Rod. I don’t remember all the details but even if A-Rod was going to get less money, he still would have been the highest payed player in the game.
