Wells’ Ill Performance

Many of us know David Wells was not David Wells last night. After fighting flu-like symptoms and being on antibiotics for over 10 days, Wells went to the mound and within 5 innings walked two batter on 4 straight pitches. He also struck out 5 and didn’t give up a run. The performance wasn’t spectacular and was only 91 pitches long, but it was enough to earn the win.

Wells hasn’t been entirely consistent all year, but if we can get 5 scoreless innings from him everytime he’s sick, I’ll take it. His appeal will be heard for the last game he got tossed out of, but I don’t expect the suspension to be so short that he doesn’t miss a start.

The Sox really needed that performance from Wells last night. Being short-staffed and most likely handicapped when Wells’ suspension goes through, the Sox need to not only win this KC series, they need to sweep the Royals to make sure the Yankees stay where they are… in our rear-view mirror.
