Nomar At 3rd or 2nd - I Doubt It
Oddly enough, I’ve read a few posts throughout the web hinting on a possibility of Nomar Garciaparra returning to Boston on an incentive laden contract to play either first or third base. First, no chance in hell. But, worth looking at anyway.
When Nomar left the Red Sox in 2004, and not on his terms but perhaps because of them, everyone pretty much knew it was an end to an era. The era was probably “franchise players.” Arguably, franchise players have made it difficult over the years for the Sox to win a World Series. I don’t think anyone expects or really even entertains the idea of Nomar returning to Boston in any capacity because of the history, both on and off the field.
On the field: Nomar needs to throw a 90-mph fastball to first or it’s over/under-thrown. His swings at the plate have no mercy, and that’s even for pitches outside the strike-zone. Unfortunately, he’s no where near the hitter he was in his prime.
Off the field: Well, is there anything I can mention that hasn’t been reported in the press? Probably not.
Well, since we all know that Nomar’s arm in the field is more like a Civil War canon, forget putting him at 2nd — no free agent first baseman would sign with us then; having to catch a blazing throw from 45 feet away and scoop it from the ground
Forget third base too. I think we’d rather have Mueller return and get Youkilis in there more often.
So, no Nomar. Unless he wants to be a utility/off-the-bench player. I hear that goes over well with his attitude.
