Theo Rejects Deal…..So Far

As reported in the Boston Globe, Theo Epstein has turned down a 1.2Mil/3 year offer. It hasn’t been reported if that is the Red Sox’s final offer or not. I would assume the there will be another offer. Theo’s current contract ends on Oct. 31st. Word on the street is the Theo and “Evil” Larry ( if you don’t know why I call him evil, you will one day) don’t see eye to eye on some things.

I was just wondering if anyone thinks that getting Theo back as GM is a major concern? For me I could care less. I wouldn’t say that he’s top tier or below average. To me, he’s no better than most of the other GMs. For one he has more payroll to work with than all but one GM. So If he doesn’t come back…….oh well. But in that event the Sox better sign someone within 15 days after the WS, so we can get down to business.

Are you crazy? Theo may not be the best GM, and yes he made some huge screw-ups — Pedro leaving, O-Cab in exchange for Renteria, Clement — those are just the big ones. but he is a big reason for a lot of the success over the years from less “name” players. he got pokey, tony graff, and others. he just can’t fix bullpens. so sign him, and get someone else to fix the bullpen.

Go ahead, care less Shawn ;-) The bottom line is this: Theo didn’t build the team himself, and he didn’t play in any of the games either. But to consider the market of GM’s and their salaries, abilities, and authorities, I think it’s safe to say a lot of credit, recognition, and power needs to be yielded Theo’s way. He has built a farm system that garners attention, and rightfully so. He has guided 3 post season teams, and he put together the greatest Boston Red Sox team in history in 2004. The payroll issue, I agree with you. I think he manages money poorly. As has been said on many threads, deals made by Theo need an exec to comb over with a fine tooth brush. There are players that don’t care for him, but that happens everywhere. Do I think we NEED him back? No. But we SHOULD get him back, otherwise we may have to look at enticing Darth Vader (i.e. Cashman) back to the rebellion.

Give him the money he wants, but probably shouldn’t yielded him all-authority yet… i’d still like to have Pedro, o-cab, and others here, and not some that are…

“If you believe the scuttlebutt from the GMs at the World Series, Brian Cashman’s prolonged negotiation with Yankees general partner Steve Swindal is directly related to Theo Epstein’s holdout in Boston. “They’re pals,” said one GM, “and I’m sure they’re both holding out as long as they can, if nothing else, to give Theo additional leverage so he gets what he wants from the Red Sox. In any case, Brian’s going to get his money.”

See….they are in cahoots together. I just don’t see Theo as ” God’s Gift to Baseball” like alot of other people do. Since he hasn’t given us that Division title I see him as average. How many more Wild Cards do you think this team can withstand? Next year Cleveland and Oakland and Chicago and Minnesota and the Angels as well as the Yanks, Jays and O’s will be good. Instead of moving forward and thinking about who we’ll sign and how, we’re dicking around with signing a GM. The WS will be done Oct. 30th. We have a 15 day period to deal with our FA ( and it sounds like Timlin is the only one who wants to deal so far). Then it’s us vs. everyone else for the top FAs. Lets get to work!
