Round Two: GM Candidates Get 2nd Interviews

It seems as though the BB’s have made it to the second round. Jim Beattie and Jim Bowden were invited back for second interviews for the club’s general manager’s position yesterday. The GM spot has been vacant for nearly twenty days now, since Theo Epstein’s departure. Despite rumors of Theo regretting his decision not to re-sign and wanting to return, there has been no substantial indication from either side that it was ever a possibility.

The list of potential candidates to fill the GM position who have turned down the offer to interview has grown lengthy. Apparantly, word on the street is that Boston and Evil Larry are not for everyone, especially if they aren’t for Theo who is a Boston native and spent his entire baseball management career working with Evil Larry.

Unfortunately, we’re losing out on a lot of very qualified candidates because they just aren’t interested. I’m not sure either of the BB’s are right for the job. If we can get Damon to return to Boston and Manny to be happy, it might not be so pressing to resolve the GM situation with a top-tier GM. But, obviously, we don’t want to sell the farm. It may also go without saying that Theo wanted the prospects to get a chance next season rather than target free agents and trades, and Evil Larry may want to bring in talent from outside.

Again, much of this is speculation, but I’m no Dan Shaugnessy so don’t quote me ;-)

Actually I think it could possibly be the other way around. I posted this on boston.com as an answer to a question about how we are aproaching this weak FA period:

“I want to put this out first. I am not a supporter of Theo or LL. I see them Darth Vader and the Emperor. Vader (Theo) learned from the Emperor (LL) and became very powerfull within the Republic ( RSN). Vader was evil but did have some good in him but………..the Emperor was mostly evil.

Honestly why do you build up a farm system? To either trade them or play them in the near future. If you don’t do one or the other there becomes a back log. Player get angry in the minors ( Delmon Young - TB) or MLB player get weary of losing their jobs ( always a possibility, but some may not understand that).

Something tells me that Theo wanted to do a patch job and win now. He’s young and risk is easy (or easier) to handle while being young. LL wants to get rid of big contracts and play the young guys, so he can make money at a larger profit. Then once the FA market gets better and with more money in pocket we can re-load in 07′.”

I disagree in large part because Theo has been very upfront about “him” not wanting to trade the minor leaguers. I think the risk and the now is very much with the younger players, and the performance of the prospects drafter under Theo’s tender, will be more showing of his GM record than the past 3 seasons, I think.

I think George and Cashman get the rights to the Emperor and Vader.
