Edes Delivers Intersting Rumors
I was reading, literally a few minutes ago, about trade rumors including everyone from Renteria and Orlando Cabrera, to Julio Lugo and Manny Rameriz. As exciting as some of the rumors are, especially getting O-Cab back, I don’t think any of Edes’ notes will fan out. Perhaps the Renteria to Braves possibility, but I’m not certain Julio Lugo (who is a .276 career hitter and .340 OBP) is the right fit for Boston.
Also, if Edes is right on the Mirabelli for Loretta with the Padres, I don’t want to see that happen. No way, no how! We have a great backup catcher, and if this past season proved anything, Tim Wakefield isn’t easy to catch

If Mirabelli does get dealt for Loretta it would probably work out for the best. Hear me out: If we keep Wells 42, it’s only for one year. Pedroia is supposedly not as ready as everyone thinks he is. And yes, Dougie catches the knuckleball. Now if we make the trade, Loretta is only going to be with us for most likely one year (FA in 06′). Pedroia gets the time he needs. We keep Shoppach, who catches for Charlie Zink (knuckle baller) in AAA and possibly pick up Akinori Otsuka for the bullpen. Shoppach is young and Mirabelli isn’t. Plus this will give Shoppach the time he needs to get ready to be a MLB catcher. So in the end we end up keeping Shoppach, picking up Otsuka and not rushing Pedroia into the fire all while getting a servicable all-star 2B.

Ok, I heard you out. Dougie is the bird in the hand, and Shoppach is only 1 bird in the bush. I can see your scenery above and it’d be nice if the statistics favored that way for a successful season. However, a lot of parts of the team are shifting around, the nucleus is changing dramatically. Next season is becoming more of a craps shoot than a strategic approach.
Sure, things may work out over the next couple years, and I too would like to hold on to Shoppach because Varitek isn’t young either.
I do, however, think that Wells will not be here next season. I also think that ditching Renteria after one season to get O-Cab back could have its plus and minuses. I really wish I was sitting in at the GM meetings
