Can’t Keep Up With Trades
Buzz is about that Edgar Renteria has been shipped to Atlanta for the Braves’ top prospect, 3B Andy Marte. Nothing has been announced as official, but the Sox seem to even be willing to pick up part of th e$29 million owed Renteria over the next 3 years.
We all know Renteria struggled on the field, earning a career high and league leading 30 errors. His bat was so-so, perhaps inline with his career hitting stats.
The idea is to turn around and ship Marte to the Devil Rays for Lugo — yeah, another infielder with a hole in his glove. Or, they can try and sign a free agent short stop to replace Renteria… I guess we really didn’t value Hanley Rameriz or Edgar Renteria that much. Short stops have been coming and going a lot since Nomar was dealt, and O-Cab is greatly missed… perhaps the biggest “un-signing” of the 2004 offseason.

No….the biggest “un-signing” was Pedro. Now that you’ve had time to think about it, I can imagine that you agree. With that I’m going to say that I think the Red Sox are getting rid of Theo’s mistakes. Maybe this was some of the discussion that Evil Larry and Wonder Boy were having. After all a GM’s greatest feats don’t trump his worst decision….at least that’s true in Boston.
If I were the GM, I would have given Renteria another year to get his act together. I also though….would’ve signed him over O-Cab last year. So I guess that I would’ve made the same mistake. I also would have signed Clement only because we had to, and that’s what Theo did. The biggest difference with Renteria and Clement though is that Renteria was “Theo’s” guy. He could have signed O-Cab and the nation would have been very happy. Instead he went with Edgar and it didn’t work out and the fan base pointed the finger.
Now there is a purging of all that is Theo’s worst decisions. The last remaining piece is Clement.

I say the biggest unsigning was O-Cab because I don’t think Pedro was ever seriously gonna come back unless we bought the whole country of the Dominican Republic.
I think we gave Clement way too much money, and I’d rather see Bronson stick around than Clement. I think Bronson is very useful from the pen or as a starter — Clement, well we know Clement is only useful until the all-star break.
