Will They Get It Right This Time Around?
Arguably this offseason has been a rollercoaster ride of many sorts. There have been what seems an infinite number of fingers pointing at failures by the front office. The FO’s trend this year should not be startling anyone — they wait and wait and wait it seems. They did it with Pedro, appeared to have done it with Damon, and let’s hope and pray that they don’t do it to Papi.
David Ortiz has expressed serious interest in signing a long-term contract with the Sox despite a multitude of offseason meltdowns in various areas of the organization over the last couple seasons.
If ever there is really a face of a franchise, it’s David Ortiz. No one can count the number of times this may has carried the team on his back. Last year he was robbed of his MVP award, and he’s seen many of his best teammates depart for money and “respect” reasons.
The Red Sox found Big Papil from a blunder by the Twins. He’s come through miraculously for the team, time and time again. At present, he’s paid peanuts compared to his talents. And perhaps the best contract negotiation of 2004 was signing Ortiz to an extention, and he certainly wasn’t holding out for mucho dollars. This guy is not only a warrior, he’s a hero and the franchise’s most valuable player. Period.
I’d love to hear that Ortiz signed another multi-year extension with the club before the season starts. I don’t want to lose him, and I don’t think we can afford to.
‘’I would like to stay. Boston has been good to me. Yes, the owners really want to make this happen. I guess they want, with all that’s been going on, to give Boston some good news.”
