Julián Tavárez Signed, Nearly $7 Million Later

The Red Sox have signed relief pitcher Julián Tavárez, formerly of the St. Luis Cardinals. If you don’t remember him, I’m shocked. He’s been in the news quite a bit for a variety of reasons, not of them anything to be proud of. But, you should remember him from the 2004 World Series as the pitcher Mark Bellhorn hit a home run off the foul pole on.

In any event, the details are fairly straight-forward: $6.7mm over 2 years. That’s a lot for a reliever, I think. One I personally don’t see as a “natural” fit for Fenway. He’s a sinker-ball, ground-out type pitcher with some decent career stats for a reliever. Hopefully he’ll be extremely helpful to the pen.
