And We Signed Him… why?

We all knew it. We knew what we were getting. We, also, probably knew we were overpaying for him too. Yesterday’s mayhem, as childish as it was, was inevitable… eventually. Julian Tavarez brings a reputation with him that puts Maple Leaf Ty Dome to shame. This guy is more than a loose canon, he’s more than a distraction, he’s an impediment. Dug out telephones around the league fear this guy. And, yesterday, I think the Red Sox learned to fear their own teammate and his actions more than the Devil Rays ever will.

Without recapping the incident, Tavarez should have nothing but apologies and no excuses. Despite his pine-tar pitching talents, the guy’s mental stability is a huge liability for this team. To imagine him staying here for the two years is worrisome.

I miss the days of old, when I actually liked pretty much the entire roster of the Red Sox. I’m not certain Tavarez adds that missing piece needed in the bullpen for the next two years to compete, especially with Paps down there now. Things can happen, and people do get hurt; Gathright not withstanding. Hopefully the Sox have a way of ironing this out for the best over the long-haul, because actions like punching a guy on one-knee in spring training, whew — nothing to say.

A guy like Tavarez brings intensity. Who cares if it’s cheap or not. It’ll make people think twice about saying something to him (media beware). Over the past few years there were plenty of Sox that I didn’t like and it wasn’t because they like to fight. Maybe now since Kapler is gone, Tavarez is there to pick up the slack and help Papi and Trot kick some TB ass….literaly. We all know about bench clearing brawls and how it pumps up the team and crowd. Just ask Domi how it works. There is a role for every one and only a few can feed Manny applesauce. That job is not for everyone.

So next time Julien, throw a punch for me.
