Schilling Solid In Sox Victory
No one could really ask for a better opening day ballgame, if you’re a Red Sox fan. Although he wasn’t overpowering or dominant, Curt Schilling’s performance was solid and led the Sox to their first victory of the season.
It was quite apparent that his velocity was good, but his splitter wasn’t all that. Fortunately, he mixed up the pitches enough to be very effective against a good Texas Rangers line-up.
The newcomers, from Lowell, Crisp, to Gonzalez and Loretta, played incredibly well. Lowell notching his first home run of the season and A.G. added a couple of singles out of the 9 spot.
Defensively the highlights were in the outfield. Crisp had a couple of grabs that could have spelled trouble for the inning, especially Keith Foulke who didn’t have the greatest 9th but managed to seal it off after giving up 1 run.
I think taking the first game can do a lot for this club. There’s been a lot of talk as to how good this team can be. You have a lot of new players on the roster and a few question marks. The sooner those question marks get answered in a positive manner, I think the stronger this team becomes as the confidence levels will rise.
If Wakefield can go out tomorrow and have a good outing, it makes it a great opportunity for a sweep to open the season.
ON NOTE: Ortiz is on pace to blast 162 home runs this season
