1 Up - 1 Down
Yesterday’s performance by Schilling was exciting. That it’s. It’s that simple. Yesterday’s game had a positive outcome, today’s game had a very poor outcome.
The bottom line is that the Sox offense is struggling. We’ve come to experience a lot of offense over the past few years and many of us weren’t expecting that kind of offense to return this year. But, this is frustrating. To date we’ve won nearly as many games where we’ve scored less than 3 runs than we did all of last year. We’re not even a tenth of the way into the season, yet.
Manny is struggling at the plate, and I’m getting tired of hearing reporter after newscaster mention how he’ll turn it around — at the end of the year he’ll have the same numbers — blah blah blah. Right now, no one is picking up the offense. The runs aren’t being driven in, and when that happens it doesn’t matter how good your pitching staff is if you can’t move the guys around the bags.
The Sox lead the AL with leaving men on base. We’d win that coveted prize for the whole league if the Dodgers weren’t just a tad better than us at leaving ducks on the pond. I think yesterday’s game, despite the win, the Sox left 11 runners on base. That’s crazy! With that kind of run production we will need many shut outs over the season.
Ok, so we’re still in first place. It is early. Several players are what you could call struggling at the plate. No specific batter has regularly stepped up. We’ve had occassional strokes of power in a spotted pattern. I really hope the offense starts click, because guys like Clement rely on it, and pitchers like Wakefield deserve it.

It’s still a little early to be worried about Manny and about some hitters to break it open. If we were 4-9 maybe, but this year we are doing what the ChiSox did all last year. Win the one run games. We’ve played 13 games so far. Besides, what are we going to do if Manny doesn’t get red hot real soon? Bench him? Are pitching is doing well so far and our defence has been better than last year. As Meat Loaf once said 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. Hell, would could be scoring all kinds of runs like Detroit right?
